Comments Off on Do You Need Insurance When You Rent A Car?
If you have collision and comprehensive coverage on your own car insurance policy, you probably don’t need to purchase the expensive insurance offered by a car rental company.
If you don’t think it is expensive, take the cost per day and multiply it by the appropriate number and compare it with your regular car insurance. For example multiply by 30 if you pay your car insurance monthly.
This is because of what is called “nonowned auto” insurance. A standard automobile insurance policy will extend the physical damage coverage that you have on your policy to cars that you rent or borrow in most instances. This is the standard whether you have an automobile insurance policy in South Carolina, Florida or anywhere else in the United States.
If you have physical damage coverage on your own car and are comfortable with the deductible and limits why should you be less comfortable when driving a rental car?
Your risk of getting into an accident may be a little greater when you are driving a rental car. You will be driving an unfamiliar car on what are probably unfamiliar roads. However, if you have coverage on your own car that will pay a body shop to fix your car you are probably better off saving the money you would pay for the rental car company’s policy.
I wonder how many of the people whose job it is to sell you these over priced policies have been trained to tell you that your present insurance policy extends to a nonowned auto and is likely to give you adequate coverage?
These policies may not seem expensive at first blush because you pay for them on a daily basis. However, if you multiply the rate by 30 and compare it with your monthly car insurance bill… and then take into account the fact that this is likely to be redundant coverage… and then take in to account that the coverage is only for physical damage and doesn’t include all the other benefits of your current policy such as the liability coverage or uninsured motorist coverage you may find it easy to answer the question: Do I need insurance when I rent a car?

Comments Off on Self Employed Dental Insurance
Dental insurance for self employed men and women is available from several places although in many cases the best solution may not be dental insurance at all. The places to look for dental insurance and/or dental coverage include group insurance (as a dependent of your spouse), dental insurance that is part of policy that includes medical insurance for self employed individuals, stand alone dental insurance, and dental discount plans.
Dental Insurance through Your Spouse’s Job
Dental insurance that one can get on their own often provides less coverage than plans that are available through groups. This means that going through your spouse’s or domestic partner’s employment is often the best option.
However, it pays to look at other options because in many cases an employer will subsidize the cost of dental and health insurance for their employees, but not do so for their employees’ dependents. Also sometimes even the price for the employee’s insurance is higher than a policy one might purchase on their own.
Individual Dental and Health Insurance in One Policy
Another option to look at is dental insurance that is included as part of a health insurance policy you purchase directly from the insurer. If you are self-employed and need dental insurance you probably also need health insurance. You may get the best deal when you purchase them together.
Standalone Dental Insurance
Policies that provide dental insurance and nothing else are often poor values. Preventative care may be covered right away, but you will probably have to pay premiums for two years before any mayor work is covered.
Because these plans are often overpriced for the benefits offered, many people are better off with a dental discount plan (see below) or simply paying for dental expenses out of their pocket.
The reason for this is that insurance companies would lose money on dental insurance if they allowed people to purchase a policy and get substantial coverage right away. It would be too easy to purchase a policy, pay only a few months worth of premiums while getting major work done. Insurance companies call this “adverse selection.”
This is a major reason why purchasing dental insurance through a group or as part of a health insurance policy is often better. Since group dental insurance plans are typically purchased only during an open enrollment period the insurance company is likely to get more premiums from individuals who do not need immediate dental care. When an insurance company sells dental insurance as part of a health insurance policy, they also get much less adverse selection and therefore are able to give you a better price and better value.
Dental Discount Plans
This is often the best option for the self-employed. If you can’t purchase a good plan through your spouse’s employer-sponsored insurance and buying a policy that includes both dental and health insurance isn’t attractive, a dental discount plan may be an excellent option.
These plans are not dental insurance although they can be a much better deal than standalone dental insurance.
When you purchase a dental discount plan you get a discount on services. You may get 25% or 35% off your dental care. The annual price for a dental discount plan is often a fraction of a stand-alone dental insurance policy; the annual cost may be the equivalent of the cost of two or three months of dental insurance premiums. This can result in major cost savings for you.
Although health insurance discount plans are often oversold and overpriced, dental discount plans are often very well priced and offer good value to the consumer.
When making decisions about self employed dental insurance be sure to look at all your options. If you have a spouse or domestic partner, you may get the best deal through their employer. If not you may want to look at dental coverage that is included as part of a health insurance policy. If neither of this are viable options a dental discount plan may be your best option.

Comments Off on Compare Insurance Plans: Health
When you compare health insurance plans there are three major aspects you should look at. Benefits, network and price are the areas to focus on.
Health Insurance Benefits: Policy Comparison Tips
You should be able to find a policy brochure or outline of coverage that describes any policy you are considering. You can probably download one from a website or have an agent email or mail one to you.
When you look at the brochure be sure to flip to the section that describes what they don’t cover. The section may be entitled something like “limitations and exclusions.” Sometimes the limitations and the exclusions are in two separate sections. Read this information carefully.
Watch out for policies that have a list of things that they cover with dollar amounts next to them. These policies are usually less than they appear to be. The dollar amounts in the schedule are rarely enough to cover the full costs. The amounts are not likely to increase with inflation. Also the list, no matter how long, will probably not cover everything that a good policy will cover.
The benefits of your health insurance policy are important, but they should not be looked at in a vacuum. The relationship of price to benefits is paramount.
Often a high deductible policy will have a premium that is low enough to justify the additional risk. In fact, sometimes the premium is low enough that there is no additional risk when compared to a more expensive policy. If the more expensive policy has a deductible that is $1,000 less than the cheaper medical insurance plans but has a price tag that is $1,000 more the less expensive plan is the better plan assuming the other benefits are the same.
Sometimes cheap medical insurance plans are better insurance plans, but you have to do your research to make sure.
Provider Network for Health Insurance: Policy Comparison Tips
Most health insurance companies have their network lists of providers online today. You definitely want to make sure that a hospital that is convenient to you is on their list. You also want to make sure that doctors who are acceptable to you are on their list. Although it may be best to have your existing physician on the list, that may or may not be crucial. If you are willing to switch doctors, make sure that there are doctors on the network list who are near your home or office.
Health Insurance Prices and Coverage: Policy Comparison Tips
As in just about everything else, cost is a factor. This is very true when looking at insurance for medical. Health insurance prices, however need to be looked at and compared with coverage.
When you are comparing health insurance plans it pays to look at policies from different companies and to compare prices, benefits and the network. All three are important.
